'Filipinos in the U.S. Navy & Coast Guard During the Vietnam War': New Memoir Provides Insight into Recruitment of Filipinos and Their Service During Vietnam

GALVESTON, Texas, July 15 PRNewswire — In his new memoir, "Filipinos in the U.S. Navy & Coast Guard During the Vietnam War" (published by AuthorHouse - http://www.authorhouse.com), author Ray L. Burdeos sheds light on the Filipinos who fought alongside American soldiers in the Vietnam war and shares his experiences in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Burdeos tells the story of 12 Filipinos — six in the Navy and six in the Coast Guard — who were recruited under the direction of the Chief of Naval Operations at the U.S. Naval Station, Sangley Point, Cavite, Philippines. Burdeos asserts that the recruitments occurred under what he calls "very unusual circumstances," because the men were not U.S. citizens or green card holders and entered a U.S. port in San Francisco without a Philippines passport or U.S. visa of any kind.

"Filipinos in the U.S. Navy & Coast Guard During the Vietnam War" provides insight into the discrimination of Filipinos during and after the Vietnam war. Burdeos gives a comprehensive history of the 12 men he knew, including how they came to join the U.S. military, and provides a history of the country and the limitations the United States placed on Filipino immigration.

In addition to sharing his personal experiences and those of the Filipinos he fought with, Burdeos relates a story about presidential candidate John McCain when he was a cadet at the Naval Academy:

The Filipino steward was pleasantly surprised, but stunned, to see and hear midshipman McCain, a Caucasian cadet, come to the aid of a Filipino steward. McCain appeared daring and not afraid of confrontation with the firstie. He seemed to have distaste to anyone using rank to abuse others in the lower ranks. \"What did you say, Mister?\" the firstie said in a loud intimidating voice to McCain. \"Why don't you stop picking on him,\" McCain responded and stayed firm while looking straight to the face of the firstie. \"What's your name, Mister?\" The firstie snapped back with outward behavior to intimidate McCain. \"John McCain,\" he said shamelessly. \"What's yours?\"

Ray L. Burdeos was born in Butuan in the province of Agusan, Philippines and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1955. Upon retirement after 23 years of active-duty service, he was a recipient of the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, Commandant Letter of Commendation, National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifle Medal and Expert Pistol Medal. Burdeos earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health care services with a major in health care administration from the University of Texas.

He is also the author of "Flips in Philadelphia" and "The Steward and the Captain's Daughter" (both published by AuthorHouse - http://www.authorhouse.com). For more information, visit http://www.rayburdeos.com.
