Wounded Warrior Project's Soldier Ride Takes a Bite Out of the Big Apple With the Empire State Challenge

- Registered charity ride on last day of ride in East Hampton -

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — From July 23-26, Wounded Warrior Project's Soldier Ride will bring over twenty wounded warriors from the current war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and five wounded members of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) to New York to cycle from Manhattan to East Hampton, traveling through Nassau and Suffolk County in Long Island. In addition to the warriors' portion of the ride, WWP encourages the public to participate in a special charity ride in East Hampton on Saturday, July 26th.

"Wounded Warrior Project is thrilled to add to the public participation element to this year's Soldier Ride. This allows the American public to express their support for our nations wounded by riding with them, in body and spirit," stated Woody Groton, Soldier Ride National Tour Director.

The Empire State Challenge will kick-off on July 24th in mid-town Manhattan and run approximately 20 miles with a stop at corporate sponsor AIG's headquarters down town before ending at South Street Seaport. Riders will then board FDNY fire boats and be transported to Brooklyn. On July 25th the riders will start at Babylon Town Hall and then ride along the water from Jones Beach to Cedar Beach. The Empire State Challenge Charity Ride will be held on Saturday, July 26 in memory of Marine Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter of Sag Harbor who was killed in action in Ramadi, Iraq on April 22, 2008. All funds raised support Wounded Warrior Project.

Soldier Ride is a program of Wounded Warrior Project that provides key rehabilitation opportunities for wounded warriors and raises public awareness and money for those that have been severely injured during the current war on terror. Wounded Warrior Project also offers services and programs like benefits counseling, advocacy initiatives and combat stress seminars to aid in the transition from hospital bed to an independent productive life. All participants are provided the adaptive equipment they need to cycle with a missing limb or limbs.

There will be various media and interview opportunities with wounded warriors.

Details for the Charity Ride:

— Empire State Challenge opening ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at, American Legion Post 419, 15 Montauk Hwy, Amagansett, New York — Participants can choose from three possible events: 62 mile bike ride, 35 mile bike ride or a 4 mile walk — Post ride BBQ for all registered participants, which include an event t-shirt for all riders. Registration Fees: Adults $50, Children 15 and under $25
