For her efforts, Verstraete will receive $1,500 in prize money from AAA. In addition, her winning poster will appear as part of an ad in the official race program for the upcoming Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway (July 3-5). The weekend of racing will feature the Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series.
Verstraete's poster was among 2,811 submitted in Michigan for AAA's 64th Annual Traffic Safety Poster Contest. Each year, students design posters or PSAs using traffic safety slogans determined by AAA. Entrants are grouped according to grade: K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Grand Award winners are selected from among all first-place entries in one of four categories: primary, elementary, junior- and senior-high schools.
Entries are judged on originality, technique, visual impact and relationship of messaging to traffic safety. The program continues its primary aim of reducing traffic and pedestrian crashes, the No. 1 cause of death for children ages three to 14. The program enables youth to showcase creativity and create memorable entries, leading their peers to safety through example and enthusiasm.
