Luxo's L-1 Task Light Inspires Design for Another Pixar Hit: 'Wall-E'

ELMSFORD, N.Y., June 25 PRNewswire — Pixar Films' anticipated smash hit movie, "Wall-E," whose main character is the last robot on earth, was significantly inspired by Luxo's iconic L-1 task light.

In a recent interview, Wall-E director Andrew Stanton, who also directed Pixar's Academy-Award winning "Finding Nemo," noted that the combination of the L-1 and a pair of binoculars served as an inspiration for Wall-E. "Luxo was always an inspiration because of all the life it gave an inanimate object," Stanton said.

The new movie is coming out at the same time Luxo has introduced the next generation of task lighting: the Ninety. Another key design element in the film came from another iconic source: Apple. According to Fortune magazine, Stanton's other robot Eve (Wall-E's potential love interest) is a sleek, modern and pod-like droid that looks very much like she was born in Apple's design room. This is more than just a coincidence, as Eve marks the first collaboration with Steve Jobs' Apple-Pixar-Disney vision, where Apple's design leader Jonathan Ive was involved on a consultative basis.
