Dermatology Nurses' Association Teams with International Publisher to Launch its Own Journal
MT. LAUREL, N.J., June 18 PRNewswire — After 25 years, 26 chapters and more than 3,000 members, the Dermatology Nurses' Association (DNA) is on the brink of a new era. And, beginning in February, DNA's fresh path means members and thousands of non-members alike can read the latest news and cutting-edge technologies with the click of a mouse. DNA's brand-new publication will be available, in its entirety, online, offering readers more opportunities to access it and to participate in online-only interactive features. The bi-monthly, four-color publication will join the ranks of international publisher Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins' (LWW) already impressive roster of 275 journals. The new journal will become the official journal of the DNA.
Heightened visibility and benefits
A new direction with LWW means that DNA will have increased exposure and recognition as the new publisher markets to the more than 1 million subscribers of LWW journals. The DNA's journal will be included on http://www.nursingcenter.com, a portal site to more than 50 nursing and health care journals from LWW and society partners. The site has 366,000 registrants and receives more than 170,000 unique visitors monthly. It features the largest collection of online CE courses representing over 2,400 contact hours. Nursingcenter.com will offer CE test discounts to DNA members.
Pride in ownership
Key in DNA's new journal is that LWW will offer DNA the ability to own its journal and the freedom to reap financial benefits from that ownership. "The association is at the point now where we believe we can control our own destiny, our own future," said Victoria Elliott, DNA's executive director. "Our new, self-owned journal can become the unique voice of the DNA and help to shape the vision of the DNA."
Subscriptions to DNA's new journal will cost $12 for members, a substantial savings over the current journal, while offering dermatology professionals the most up-to-date nursing essentials.
Comprehensive process based on best practices
The DNA formed a task force in the fall and enlisted business consultant Morna Conway, of the Conway Group, to help the association take ownership of its journal. "We used a process that's proven to work. It's absolutely standard," Conway said. "It is a best practice in association management." Conway and the task force reached out to five publishers seeking a request for proposal. Of those, Philadelphia-based LWW agreed to give DNA the freedom sought in terms of assuming ownership of the journal and having greater control of its content.
DNA's new journal will be among good company at Lippincott, since the publisher prints about 50 other nursing publications. "The nursing division is a small group within the big company of Lippincott," said Kathleen M. Phelan, publisher of Lippincott Williams and Wilkins. "We are dedicated to the nursing publication."
"We are excited about the wonderful opportunities that await us thanks to the partnership with LWW," Elliott said. "Our brand-new journal will help the DNA build on the foundation that has made us an exceptional association in the dermatological field for the last 25 years."
