SEPTA El Construction Requires Closure of Intersection at 63rd & Market Streets This Weekend

Intersection Also Closed During Upcoming Summer Weeks in July, August

PHILADELPHIA, June 18 PRNewswire-USNewswire — SEPTA's planned demolition of 63rd Street Station this weekend will require closure of the intersection at 63rd & Market Streets beginning Friday, June 20 at 7 p.m. until Monday, June 23 at 4 a.m.

Construction on the Market-Frankford Line will also require the extended closure of the intersection for approximately three nonconsecutive weeks later this summer.

The extended summer closures will occur in July (July 11-21) and August (Aug. 8-25) as SEPTA enters the final phase of construction for the Market Street Elevated (MSE) reconstruction project.

While the intersection is closed this weekend, work crews will begin demolition of 63rd Street Station platform and waiting areas located above the intersection of 63rd & Market Streets. SEPTA cautions commuters that increased traffic is expected on secondary roads as a result of the closure. Electronic signs are positioned at various locations to alert motorists about the closure and related detours.

SEPTA will also operate shuttle buses this weekend in place of regular El service between 40th Street Station and 69th Street Terminal beginning at 8 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday.

MSE is building a new Market-Frankford Line between 46th & Market Streets in West Philadelphia and Millbourne in Delaware County. The project includes a streamlined, single-beam support structure, reconstruction of six ADA compliant customer-friendly stations, and art inspired architectural features that will improve the overall riding experience for passengers.

SEPTA opened the newly reconstructed Millbourne Station on Monday. The station is one of five new stations, including 46th, 52nd, 56th and 60th, now open as a result of MSE.

SEPTA's Community Information Center (CIC) provides passengers, residents and businesses with project information. CIC is open Monday through Wednesday on the mezzanine level at 56th Street Station and from Thursday through Saturday at the Enterprise Center (4548 Market Street). Information is also available by telephone at 215-580-6484 or 215-243-4141.
