Fatherless Daughter to Speak Before Group of At-Risk Teens

NEW YORK, May 21 PRNewswire — Niq Hardwick, a fatherless woman who rose above her circumstances, will speak to a group of young people at the East Bay Conservation Corps Corpsmembers Academy in Oakland on May 23, 2008.

Hardwick, a former educator who was on her way to pursuing her PhD and becoming a school principal, saw her dreams dashed when she was arrested on a federal charge of telephone harassment — a charge she believes stems from growing up without a dad. Hardwick's inspirational story will prove encouraging to young women who are also being raised without their biological fathers.

When she was just seven years old, Hardwick's mother was killed in a car accident. With no biological father, her stepfather was one of the few nurturing influences in her life. Hardwick, who is currently working on her memoirs, is certain other young women can relate, but she wants to teach these women how they can stay on a successful path without getting sucked into a life of rage and bad relationships. "I strongly feel as though a child needs to grow up being nurtured by both a loving mother and father," Hardwick says. "The mere fact that my biological father was not a part of my life deprived me of fully developing emotionally."

While an educator in the La Marque Independent School District, Hardwick had a stellar record, leading her third-grade class to a 100% passing rate on the Reading Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. She also taught at Mainland Preparatory Academy in La Marque, TX.

Hardwick's personal story will inspire teens and young women to take control of their own destinies.
