Matt Franklin to Bring Significant Leadership and Expertise to Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition as President
FOSTER CITY, Calif., May 20 PRNewswire — Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition (Mid-Pen) today announced that Matthew O. "Matt" Franklin will assume the role of President when Fran Wagstaff retires on July 1, 2008 after 25 years of leading the organization.
The Mid-Pen Board of Directors has completed a nationwide search to find the right person to further its mission to provide safe, affordable shelter of high quality to those in need; to establish stability and opportunity in the lives of residents; and to foster communities that allow people from all ethnic, social and economic backgrounds to live in dignity, harmony and mutual respect. Since its foundation in 1970, Mid-Pen has developed over 6,000 affordable housing units at more than 90 properties serving residents in 9 Northern California counties.
"Under Fran's leadership, Mid-Pen has become one of the largest and most innovative providers of affordable housing in the nation. Finding a qualified successor was no small task," said Mark Battey, Chair of the Mid-Pen Board of Directors. "We are thankful to have found a new leader who brings a unique combination of experience, skills and passion to continue this success. We are confident that Matt will effectively advance Mid-Pen's mission and we are thrilled that he has chosen Mid-Pen as the next stage in his extraordinary career."
Mr. Franklin currently serves as the Executive Director of San Francisco's Mayor's Office of Housing, an appointment he received by Mayor Gavin Newsom in 2004. In his role, he coordinates all City housing policy, including oversight of financing for approximately 3,500 new affordable rental units currently in predevelopment, compliance monitoring for approximately 24,000 existing affordable units with City financing, and management of several first time home buyer assistance programs.
Prior to assuming this position, Mr. Franklin served as Director of California's Department of Housing and Community Development. In that role, he served as the Governor's lead housing policy advisor and supervised a Department of 480 employees with an annual budget of $770 million. Previously, Mr. Franklin held executive-level positions in both the public and private sectors of affordable housing. These include: Vice President of Emerging Markets for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, and Deputy Chief of Staff for the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
"I have long admired the work of Mid-Pen Housing, an organization that creates the highest quality affordable housing and stays true to its mission to serve low-income households," said Mr. Franklin. "I am honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to lead Mid-Pen in the future."
Mid-Pen is part of an active community committed to providing low-income housing throughout Northern California. "Fran set a very high bar during her tenure at Mid-Pen," said Dianne Spaulding, Executive Director of the Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California. "Though she has left big shoes to fill, Matt is an excellent replacement. He has a rare combination of entrepreneurial energy and government experience. And he is known as an exceptional leader. Mid-Pen is well positioned to succeed under his direction."
