Lutein and Zeaxanthin Improve Sports Vision for Athletes

LONG ISLAND, N.Y., May 15 PRNewswire — Two nutrients found in certain fruits and vegetables can improve sports vision for athletes. These phytonutrients are lutein and zeaxanthin and they are found in high concentration in the macular of the eye.

Studies show that lutein and zeaxanthin not only help prevent macular degeneration but can even improve vision in people with healthy eyes. For example, they can improve photostress recovery under glare conditions. This can be of great benefit to any athlete that may play their sport on a partly cloudy summer day, as they will help the eyes quickly adjust to the alternating illumination between bright sunshine and intermittent shadows.

Lutein can be found in high amounts in zucchini, red seedless grapes, squash, pumpkin, spinach, peas, celery, Brussels sprouts, cucumber, and green peppers. Good sources of zeaxanthin are orange peppers, oranges/orange juice, mangos, and honeydews. Corn contains high amounts of both.

Despite numerous public health campaigns aimed at getting us to eat more fruits and vegetables, only 11% of Americans are meeting USDA guidelines. One convenient alternative is to take a dietary supplement. Natural Athletic Nutrition LLC, a Long Island based nutrition company, has introduced a product called Vizuo XL Sports Vision Enhancement which contains lutein and zeaxanthin.

There are many vision support products on the market but Vizuo XL is unique in that it also addresses the neurological component of vision by including important nutrients besides lutein and its partner zeaxanthin. These other nutrients will help improve blood circulation to the brain and also boost dopamine and acetylcholine, two neurotransmitters that are critical for the brain to quickly process visual information so that the athlete can react fast on the playing field.

"One of the most exciting aspects of the product is its ability to speed the development of sport specific motor skills and potentially decrease the amount of time it takes to reach an elite level of performance," says company president Will Horan. He explains that this is accomplished by up-regulating the voltage dependent anion channel, a small pore-forming protein on the outer membrane of cellular mitochondria. This will improve synaptic plasticity, the ability of the synapse between neurons to change in strength. Many neuroscientists believe synaptic plasticity plays a very important role in memory and learning.
