Pennsylvania State Partners With National Geographic, Appalachian Regional Commission to Showcase Artisan Trails

HARRISBURG, Pa., May 14 PRNewswire-USNewswire — The Pennsylvania Tourism Office and the Appalachian Regional Commission today celebrated two of the state's artisan trails, which have been featured in National Geographic Traveler.

The trails, part of "Driving Tours Appalachia," a pull-out map in the April issue of the magazine, showcase Appalachia's natural, cultural and heritage assets along 28 driving trails crisscrossing the 13 states. The Pennsylvania section focused on stops along the Route 15 and Route 45 trails, including The Magpie in Lewisburg, Millionaires' Row outside of Williamsport, the Festival of the Arts in State College, and the murals in the state Capitol.

"The dynamic partnership Pennsylvania has with 12 other states is sparking new appreciation for Appalachia and it's enhancing the experience for visitors," said Mickey Rowley, deputy secretary for tourism at the state Department of Community and Economic Development. "Route 15 and Route 45 are two fine examples of the artisan trails available in the commonwealth, and VisitPa.com is the best resource to plan such an experience.

"Along with the various studios, art centers, and museums, visitors can enjoy unique lodging facilities, find plenty of opportunities for children to learn, and take advantage of special travel deals," Rowley said. "We strive to provide visitors with a memorable and enjoyable trip throughout the commonwealth where people can experience the creative culture and diverse heritage in the Keystone State."

The Appalachian Regional Commission is a unique partnership between the federal government and the 13 Appalachian states. It was created to help the region with sustained economic development and an improved quality of life.

Appalachia counts 23 million people in parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, and all of West Virginia.
