Afterschool Activities Turn Kids in a Positive Direction; DC Summit to Lead the Way

WASHINGTON, May 9 PRNewswire-USNewswireBetween the hours of 3 and 6 p.m., young people either have the opportunity to get involved in positive, enriching activities, or, left unsupervised, find themselves at greater risk of crime, substance abuse, or other behaviors that could cost not only themselves and their families, but their entire communities. As a result, prominent mayors and school leaders from across the country will be meeting at the National City Afterschool Summit in Washington, DC, May 12 to 14, 2008, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, to strengthen high-quality afterschool programs that create a seamless approach to learning and keep the children and youth in their communities headed in the right direction.

The summit will highlight local leadership and examples of the types of collaborations between schools and city officials that have made a difference in enhancing academic achievement and more successful outcomes for many children. Mayors from cities such as Omaha, Savannah and St. Paul will share their strategies to expand afterschool programs (also referred to as "out-of-school time"). Participants will also hear the latest research from the Harvard Family Research Project and a "call to action" by Charleston, SC, Mayor Joseph Riley, chair of the National League of Cities' Council on Youth, Education and Families.

The National City Afterschool Summit is sponsored by the National League of Cities' Institute for Youth, Education and Families, in partnership with the Afterschool Alliance, American Association of School Administrators, and the National School Boards Association, with support from The Wallace Foundation and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
