Pennsylvania Selected to Participate in National Governors Association Effort to Reduce Number of Children in Foster Care

One of only six states chosen nationwide

HARRISBURG, Pa., May 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Secretary of Public Welfare Estelle B. Richman announced today that Pennsylvania has been selected by the National Governors Association to participate in a multi-state initiative aimed at safely reducing the number of children in foster care.

"We have made measurable progress improving the safety of children and protecting them from child abuse and neglect in a short period of time, but there is still much more work to be done," said Secretary Richman. "It is an honor to be selected by the National Governors Association and we look forward to taking advantage of this opportunity to continue our work on behalf of all Pennsylvania children."

The NGA Center for Best Practices Policy Academy will offer Pennsylvania the opportunity to work with both national and state experts to improve outcomes for children involved in the child welfare system. As a participant, Pennsylvania will develop a two-year strategic plan to reduce the number of children in foster care, while ensuring that safety remains paramount.

As part of developing the plan, Pennsylvania's team will continue focusing on reducing the number of children in care, shortening the length of stay for those in care, and improving the availability of home and community based supports. Through the department's current efforts, the number of children receiving prevention or intervention services designed to keep families together has grown from 244,000 to 255,000. As a result of these services, the number of children in foster care over the last two years has declined by 1,000 to total approximately 20,000 today.
