Pelosi: 'Farm Bill Will Ease Strain of Rising Food Prices for American Families'

WASHINGTON, May 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on news that the House-Senate conference committee on the Farm Bill has reached a final agreement:

"The bipartisan Farm Bill will ease the strain of rising food prices for American families, begin much-needed reforms to farm payments, and make a substantial commitment to land conservation and to fruits and vegetables."

"While I would have preferred more commodity reform, I am especially pleased by the Farm Bill's investment in nutrition initiatives, which will help 38 million American families afford healthy food and offer much-needed support to food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens."

"To help transition biofuels from corn, the Farm Bill reduces the current tax credit for corn-based ethanol and creates a new tax credit to promote the production of cellulosic biofuels."

"I thank Chairman Peterson and Chairman Harkin for their balanced and bipartisan approach to crafting America's farm and food policy. As this bill is critical for America's farmers that feed America and the world, it should receive broad, bipartisan support in the House and deserves to be signed into law by President Bush."
