Cornerstone Schools, Students and Their Parents Invite Metro Detroiters 'Back to School' on June 3
DETROIT, May 8 PRNewswire — Cornerstone Schools, along with the entire student body and their parents are inviting the Metro Detroit community to go "Back to School" on Tuesday, June 3 and receive a first-hand look into the future of urban education.
Attendees of the first-ever "Back to School" event on June 3rd will be able to witness the recipe for Cornerstone's success and be able to sit in classrooms to:
— Learn to speak Chinese — Take a violin lesson — Participate in a chess match against one of Cornerstone's elite chess team members — And more ... .
"We are in a city with an educational crisis and children are the victims," said Cornerstone CEO and founder, Clark Durant. "Everyone needs to be a part of the conversation and solution for the future of urban education in our city," Durant said. "This is why it's so important for Metro Detroiters to come out and support our Cornerstone students and parents on June 3 so that the conversation and action can begin."
The June 3rd event will support Cornerstone's goals of continuing its 95% high school graduation rate and raising enough scholarship funds for their 1,131 pupil student body. None of the children are denied entry because of finances and every family must pay some of the tuition costs for their child's education.
Prominent local business leaders will also be on hand to lend their support for the students and parents.
"Education is the key to success for the future of our city and the metropolitan area," said DTE Energy Chairman & CEO Tony Earley and Immediate Past Chairman of Detroit Renaissance. "In a city with the lowest high school graduation rate in the country, Cornerstone Schools can have a profound impact on the quality of life and education in Metro Detroit. The metropolitan community can begin to change Detroit by joining with Detroiters and their children in helping to provide an excellent education," Earley said.
"Cornerstone Schools are centers of hope for children in Detroit. We are eager to showcase three new TV commercials that Jim Leyland, Justin Verlander, and Gary Sheffield did with the children," said Detroit Tigers President and General Manager Dave Dombrowski. "I look forward to learning about the violin from one of the students."
June 3 will be a fun-filled day, showing participants how they can change the lives of urban city youths. Cornerstone Schools has a robust curriculum that includes literature, fine arts, science, mathematics, writing, language, technology, history and cultures.
"As a citizen of Detroit, I want to invite the broader community to join with me and other parents who want to help change Detroit one child at a time. If the metropolitan community joins with us on June 3rd more and more children can graduate from high school and lead productive lives," says Tameko Long, Cornerstone parent.
"An invitation from parents and children of the City to the suburbs has never been done before," Durant explained. "We hope to create a community of friends for the school, our students and other children ultimately to help them graduate from high school."
"Without the Cornerstone Schools and my mother, I would not be going to Harvard Law School. I look forward to welcoming all of our guests on June 3rd," says Maurice Taylor, Cornerstone 2000 alum.
