Comair Reduces Fuel Burn by Switching to Cost Index Optimization

CINCINNATI, OH, May 7 PRNewswire - At a time when fuel prices continue to fluctuate, Comair has been able to reduce fleet-wide fuel burn by approximately 3 percent utilizing PPAS, a Cost Index optimization system designed by Applied Aeronautical Systems Inc. (AASI).

PPAS (Pilots Performance Advisory System) uses mathematical processes to provide pilots with information on optimal speeds and altitudes during specific temperatures and wind conditions. Comair's positive results with PPAS have led the airline to sign an agreement with AASI to equip its 115 regional jets with the system.

"We are very pleased that Comair chose PPAS to be part of their strategy to enhance safety and decrease costs," said Captain Gary Wagner, Chairman and CEO of AASI. "We are particularly gratified that, when Comair realized that PPAS could support their operational goals, the airline immediately integrated it into their Standard Operating Procedures."

PPAS supports aircraft that are not otherwise equipped with a cost index optimization solution. PPAS is customized with data from Comair's operation and fleet, meaning the system can constantly compute the optimum combination of speed, vertical profile and power setting while identifying and respecting individual aircraft performance limitations.

"Incorporating Cost Index flying has been a long-term goal for Comair and we are very excited with the benefits that PPAS provides," said Captain Steve Briner, director of Flight Operations for Comair. "Our crews now have an effective and environmentally positive tool to help them reduce fuel burn, enhance safety and support our operating performance."
