Estate of Award-Winning Playwright Scott McPherson Gives Green Light to Citadel Theatre Company for its Production of 'Til The Fat Lady Sings'
LAKE FOREST, Ill., May 6 PRNewswire — The estate of award-winning Chicago playwright Scott McPherson has given the green light to Lake Forest-based Citadel Theatre Company to move its current production of his unpublished first play "'Til The Fat Lady Sings" to Victory Gardens Greenhouse Theater. Still in its infancy, five-year-old Citadel Theatre, a professional non-equity theatre company, is committed to presenting productions that exhibit the emotional and intellectual richness that the best theatre inspires. This nod of approval by The McPherson Estate marks a huge step for Citadel in its mission to widen its reach in sharing its talented, first-class productions. Now in rehearsals, Wayne Mell directs a long-overdue revival for Citadel Theatre. Previews begin May 28, 29 and 30 at 8pm in the 1st Floor Mainstage at Victory Gardens Greenhouse; tickets are $15. The show opens June 5 and runs through June 29th; tickets are $25. For tickets call the Victory Gardens box office at 773-871-3000 or visit www.victorygardens.org .
Citadel Theatre acquired the rights to perform McPherson's play "Fat Lady" from his estate earlier this year. The Citadel production, which recently ended its Lake Forest run, was a smashing success and garnered rave reviews. Thanks to Citadel Theatre and The McPherson Estate, theater lovers have a chance to re-discover his lost treasure.
"When I attended Citadel's production of 'Fat Lady' in March, I was so impressed that I gave Citadel the estate's blessing to take the show to a more visible market," said Jim Bagley, Literary Agent of The Scott McPherson estate.
The first and only time McPherson's "'Til The Fat Lady Sings" was presented to theatre audiences was 25 years ago by Chicago's Lifeline Theatre, directed by Eric Simonson, now of Steppenwolf fame. A sharp, satiric comedy, the play finds wit and humor in family traditions. McPherson's second and only other play, the critically acclaimed "Marvin's Room," premiered in Chicago and New York City in 1991; directed by David Petrarca (Chicago Tribune's 1996 "Chicagoan of the Year"). In 1996, the play was adapted by McPherson to the big screen as a major motion picture; directed by Tony Award-winning director Jerry Zaks; starring Academy Award-winners Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro and Hume Cronyn.
"We are extremely honored and thrilled beyond belief to be recognized for our creative efforts in our production of 'Fat Lady,'" says Scott Phelps, Founder of Citadel Theatre Company. "Scott McPherson was a phenomenal addition to the theater community in Chicago and nationally, and is sorely missed, but never forgotten. It is with great pride that Citadel is afforded the opportunity to share with the theatrical community and patrons Scott's masterful first play," he added.
