Graduation Gift Books to Benefit Levine Children's Hospital

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 6 PRNewswire — This spring graduation season, Park Road Books and local author Tony Brown are partnering with Levine Children's Hospital to raise money for the Children's Fund. Two-thirds of the profits from each book gift set ($27), which includes Author Anna Quindlen's commencement address, "A Short Guide to a Happy Life," and Brown's response, "A Happy Guide to a Short Life, A Response to Ms. Quindlen's Fine Book," will be donated to help sustain, enhance and expand programs and resources at Levine Children's Hospital.

This intellectual ping-pong match between a best-selling author and a baby boomer with teenaged children is a spirited debate about service, gratitude, love and happiness. Quindlen's book, intended to remind college graduates to live deeply each and everyday, is in contrast to the sage advice of Brown — who boldly surmises that Yogi Berra's quote, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it..." is both stupid and lazy.

"There is wisdom in giving a college graduate a gift that will help build a better life for a child," said Mark Griffith, assistant director, Children's Miracle Network. "It's truly a gift that demonstrates to young people the importance of giving back to their community."

Brown's book, endorsed and printed with permission by Anna Quindlen, was published to raise money for worthy charities across the country. To date, more than $50,000 has been raised for non-profit organizations in this region.

"There must be tens of thousands of high school and college graduates in the Carolinas this year," said Brown. "Just think, if even a small percentage of those graduates received this gift, Levine Children's Hospital could increase their funding by a very significant amount."

This gift set can be purchased at Park Road Books, Park Road Shopping Center, 4139 Park Road, Charlotte, online at www.parkroadbooks.com or by calling 704-525-9239. Quindlen and Brown's books may also be purchased individually ($12.95 and $14.95 respectively), with two-thirds of the proceeds from each book sale donated to Levine Children's Hospital. Gift wrapping is free and the books can be shipped anywhere in the U.S. for a flat rate of $5. The promotion will run throughout the month of May, and also makes a meaningful Mother's Day present.

"Park Road Books has been a part of this community for 30 years, and we have a long history of supporting local charities," said Sally Brewster, owner, Park Road Books. "Charlotte is such a philanthropic city, and we are confident that this effort will greatly benefit Levine Children's Hospital."
