'Citizen Power': Presidential Hopeful Mike Gravel Updates Classic Commentary on Country's Woes, Possibilities

ARLINGTON, Va., May 1 PRNewswire — As a young senator from Alaska in the late 1970s, Mike Gravel (pronounced graVELL) put pen to paper to identify and propose solutions to the worst problems facing the country. Now a presidential candidate, Gravel is convinced that the substance of what he wrote then still rings true today, a realization as tragic as it is urgent. Much needs to be done.

Thirty-six years after its original publication, "Citizen Power: A Mandate for Change" (published by AuthorHouse - http://www.authorhouse.com) is being reissued in a revised version that includes both original and new material. Gravel's update of his classic social commentary is a welcome addition to the tradition of political literature that believes in the power of the many, not the few. As Ralph Nader writes in the foreword:

Like a fresh wind coming from Alaska, the state he represented as a U.S. Senator from 1969 to 1981, Mike Gravel is determined to start a debate about the fundamentals of democracy. Throughout his work in public service, Senator Gravel has understood that politics is about power — who has it, who should have it, who misuses it, and how it can be used to the betterment of human life here and around the world. He not only understands it, as the cliche has it, he also has walked the walk.

Gravel's reissue of "Citizen Power" examines the hits and misses of the original, and also presents his current positions on a number of pressing issues, including the National Initiative, education, tax reform, health care, environment and energy, the war on drugs, crime and punishment, secrecy in government, American imperialism and more.

Through it all, the former senator underscores the process by which Americans can become empowered as lawmakers in partnership with their elected officials. "The only possibility of government reform is through empowerment of the people," Gravel writes. "Wouldn't you like to have enough control so that government and corporate power respond to your needs?"

Appropriate for this election season and beyond, "Citizen Power" is a wake-up call and a direction forward for people who are tired of liberal "promises" and conservative "game plans" that offer the rhetoric of hope but, in reality, merely protect and perpetuate the status quo.

In 1971, as a freshman senator critical of both the Vietnam War and government secrecy, Mike Gravel came to national attention when he used the power of his position to release the Pentagon Papers. On March 25, 2008, Gravel ended his run for the Democratic presidential nomination and joined the Libertarian Party, and he is currently vying to become its presidential nominee.
