New Northeast Ohio Greeting Card Company Focuses on Four-Legged Niche Market
"Our culture has become so disconnected — because of the internet, video games, iPods and cell phones — it's not surprising that we have anthropomorphized our pets," Hunt explained. "I admit it, our pets are our kids. We're a family. We have birthday parties for our dogs and we invite all of their four-legged friends. And I know we're not the only ones that do this."
But it was the lack of an appropriate greeting card that spawned the idea for Sincerely, Fido. "We had found this lost dog — Fido — in our neighborhood, so we took him in," Hunt explained. "The poor thing was so pitiful. And we were so touched by his reaction when his owners came to claim him. I wanted to follow up with a card." That's when Hunt realized that there are countless situations where pet owners would appreciate specialized greeting cards especially if they were written from the pet's perspective.
That's also when the research started. Hunt says she was not surprised to discover a growing community of pet lovers who celebrate pet adoptions, puppy showers and "Bark Mitzvahs." She was surprised, however, to discover that there really weren't any mainstream card companies supporting this market.
But ever the clever innovator — Hunt had a new, albeit wacky, angle. Her card concepts include greetings for
Self-funded and backed by the help of freelance writers, photographers, art directors and a web design team, Hunt has systematically built her business. And no stone has gone unturned. Hunt has thoughtfully developed a wholesale marketing support plan that includes point-of-purchase displays in the image of a fire hydrant. Sincerely, Fido's cause-related marketing initiatives are also focused on supporting fund-raisers for pet shelters, rescue organizations and Humane Societies.
The pet-loving market has taken notice. Pet enthusiast publication, Modern Dog, has recently featured Sincerely, Fido as the staff pick for "Stuff We Love." And Celebrity Dog Watcher, an online tabloid with a cult following, asked Sincerely, Fido to participate in a special "care package" for Desperate Housewives,
