Voice Acquires Rights to Two Novels by Award-Winning and Bestselling Novelist Chitra Lekha Banerjee Divakaruni

NEW YORK, April 29 PRNewswire — Hyperion and Voice President and Publisher, Ellen Archer and Barbara Jones, Executive Editor, have pre-empted North American and audio rights to two novels by award-winning and bestselling novelist Chitra Lekha Banerjee Divakaruni. The first book, ONE AMAZING THING, is the story of a young female Indian expatriate trapped among a memorable cast of bay area characters during a west coast earthquake. It is scheduled for publication in 2010.

"Chitra Lekha Banerjee Divakaruni is the rare author who gives readers a great escape — seducing us into the sweeping story of her characters' lives — and then returns us to ourselves, enriching our understanding of human life in the early 21st century," says Archer. Jones and Archer feel that her strong, complex female characters are a wonderful, natural addition to the Voice list.

Divakaruni was born in India and lived there until 1976 whereupon she left Calcutta for the United States. Her work has been included in over 50 anthologies, including "Best American Short Stories", The O'Henry Prize Stories, and the "Pushcart Prize Anthology". Her works of fiction include the short story collection "The Unknown Errors of Our Lives" and the novel "Sister of My Heart". Two of her books, "The Mistress of Spices" and "The Sister of My Heart", have been made into movies. Her work is widely known, as she has been published in over 50 magazines, including the Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker.

"I'm delighted to be part of Ellen Archer's team at Voice," says Divakaruni. "It feels like a perfect fit for my work, which celebrates women's experience. Ellen has a great vision, and I admire her energy."

Archer and Jones negotiated the deal with Sandra Dijkstra at the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency.

Voice is an imprint by and for women. Voice successes include the groundbreaking bestseller, The Feminine Mistake by Leslie Bennetts; the delightful summer blockbusters, Life's a Beach and the upcoming Summer Blowout by Claire Cook; and the two recent The New York Times bestsellers — Lauren Groff's The Monsters of Templeton (also shortlisted for the Orange Prize) and Kelly Corrigan's The Middle Place.
