Katie Lee Joel Offers Hearst a 'Taste' of Her New Cookbook

NEW YORK, April 28 PRNewswire — Cafe 57, managed by Restaurant Associates and located in the Hearst Tower ( www.hearst.com ) will host Katie Lee Joel as featured Guest Chef on Tuesday, April 29. She will be offering guests a taste — or two — from her anticipated new cookbook, The Comfort Table. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase the volume, still piping hot off the press, and have it signed by Joel.

The Comfort Table, published by Simon & Schuster and released earlier this month, marks the first publication for Joel, who has written for Hamptons Magazine, Gotham and The Huffington Post. Katie's broad culinary experience ranges from host of the first season of Bravo's Top Chef to Special Correspondent for Extra, covering food and fashion. She also serves on the Judges panel on Food Network's Iron Chef America.

Joel was "raised in her grandmother's Southern kitchen, and comes from a 'family of great cooks and big eaters.'" The new collection consists of updated classics from her childhood in rural West Virginia, with more than 125 recipes ranging from Southern staples to inventive new favorites. In regards to her unique food perspective, Joel describes: "My taste in food is like my taste in fashion — comfortable and classic with a touch of couture. Many of the entrees are classic comfort food recipes recollected from my family that have been updated and refined." Bridging the connection between food and fashion is sure to be a hit at the Hearst Tower, home to such fashion-forward publications as Marie Claire, Harper's Bazaar and Cosmopolitan.

At Cafe 57, the emphasis is on sustainable, local and organic foods that provide smart choices for both the consumer and the environment. Joel's principle of "conscious consumption" fits nicely with Hearst's B-Well program, designed to promote overall health and well-being to employees through its four-pronged initiative focused on fitness, wellness, nutrition, and food. It also nods to the re-introduction of the cafe's growing Farmer's Market, scheduled for an early opening this May. A take on Union Square's Greenmarket, Cafe 57's Farmer's Market offers Hearst employees an opportunity to purchase the finest local produce, cheeses, breads and other local items right inside the Tower. Guests are educated on what it means to go "local," and encouraged to eat smarter at work and also to prepare healthful meals at home.

As featured Guest Chef on April 29, Joel will preview Slow-Cooker Pulled-Pork Barbeque sandwiches, reminiscent of her childhood. According to Joel, people tend to like simple foods made with the finest quality ingredients the best. Judging by the accolades she has received from big names in the food industry such as Bobby Flay and Paula Deen, who wrote the foreword of her book, Joel is sure to wow with this updated classic.

The Guest Chef series at Cafe 57 is a unique program that could only be provided by the quality and diversity of Restaurant Associates. At Hearst, Cafe 57 showcases celebrity chefs, local chefs and other specialty chefs from renowned public restaurants, cultural and corporate dining facilities. The program offers the opportunity to showcase the unique fare from a diverse group of chefs and restaurants, allowing guests (the majority of whom are Hearst employees) to sample distinct cuisines from renowned local dining establishments.

Past guest chefs at Cafe 57 have included Chef James Vellano of Bouchon Bakery as part of the Esquire "Sandwich Encyclopedia" Promotion as well as author and Food Network personality Ina Garten for a House Beautiful promotion featuring recipes from The Barefoot Contessa. The goal is to infuse new life and energy into offerings by bringing to life magazine promotions in the cafe to support Hearst's in-house publications.

Hearst Tower serves as the headquarters for Hearst Corporation, one of the nation's largest diversified media companies. The Hearst Tower has won worldwide praise for its innovative and environmentally sensitive design, and is New York City's first occupied green office building to achieve the Gold LEED rating by the U.S. Green Building Council.
