White House Celebrates Pope Benedict XVI's Birthday in Style
NEW YORK, April 16 PRNewswire — Robert Allen fabric played a singular role in pageantry of the papal visit to the White House today. President Bush and Pope Benedict XVI sat side-by-side on the South Lawn of the White House in two chairs made by Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers for the occasion upholstered in fabric by Robert Allen in the pattern Pembroke in color Oyster.
According to MSNBC reports, a crowd exceeding 13,000 people attended the first papal visit to the White House in 29 years. President Bush's audience with the pope fell on the pontiff's 81st birthday and festivities included the U.S. Marine Band playing the national anthem of the Vatican, a performance by the U.S. Army Drum and Fife Corps (in colonial garb), a 21-gun salute from the Ellipse and "The Lord's Prayer" sung by world-renowned opera singer Kathleen Battle.
