A Presentation on Freedom and Captivity

The Risks of Public Service in a Democracy

VILLANOVA, Pa., April 15 PRNewswire-USNewswire — The Matthew Ryan Center is pleased to host Dr. William Daugherty from Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) on Wednesday, April 15, 2008 at 7:00 PM in Room 1011 of Bartley Hall at Villanova's main campus in Villanova, PA. The presentation is free and is open to the public.

Dr. Daugherty joined the faculty of AASU in September 1996, after having served for more than seventeen years in the Central Intelligence Agency as an operations officer. His 444 days as a captive during the Iranian Hostage Crisis in 1979-80 adds to his ability to speak to the risks of public service.

His last assignment was in the area of covert action policy and included serving as CIA liaison officer to the National Security Council staff. Dr. Daugherty served eight years in the United States Marine Corps, including a tour in Vietnam. He holds a BA in Social Sciences from the University of California-Irvine and a Ph.D. in government from the Claremont Graduate School, with a specialization in Constitutional Law and American Foreign Policy.

Dr. Daugherty offers that, "public service is essential to the maintenance of freedom" and notes that the commitment to serve in government is a calling that does not isolate a person from the consequences of executive decisions and the mechanics of a dynamic geo-political landscape.

The Ryan Center promotes inquiry into the principles and processes of free government and seeks to advance understanding of the responsibilities of statesmen and citizens of constitutional democratic societies. We are pleased that this celebrated veteran and lauded public servant can bring his insight and perspective to the Villanova campus to share his thoughts on Public Service. We recognize that this presentation is occurring at a time when the nation is looking to Pennsylvania as the next-step in our advancing national democratic process. We encourage all to attend and learn.
