Panda Security Launches 'Infected or Not' Campaign, Offers Free Security Assessments

GLENDALE, Calif., April 14 PRNewswire — Panda Security, a leading global provider of IT security solutions, today announced the launch of its "Infected or Not" campaign (http://www.infectedornot.com), which will help consumers and businesses determine if their current networks are infected with malware. By visiting the Web site, users will have the ability to run a free security assessment on their PCs and networks, and test against Panda Security's malware database, the largest in the world with 11 million malware samples. The first ten companies that can demonstrate they are not infected will be awarded $7,500, and the first ten consumers will be awarded iPod Nanos.

The impetus for this initiative was due to an alarming 2007 PandaLabs study of 1.5 million users that revealed 72 percent of companies and 23 percent of home users with an up-to-date security solution unknowingly had malware on their networks. Traditional security solutions are no longer sufficient to protect users' computers from the increasing number of malware samples that appear every day.

"Many users and IT managers believe that all security solutions are the same and that simply having a traditional anti-virus solution installed provides sufficient protection, yet the truth is quite different," said Mathieu Brignone, chief marketing officer, Panda Security. "Due to the evolution of malware, traditional anti-virus solutions can no longer protect against malware whose sole purpose is financial gain. Users are given a false sense of security with current solutions, yet their networks are still significantly exposed to the threat of confidential data being stolen and identity theft."

The "Infected or Not" assessment utilizes Collective Intelligence, Panda Security's proprietary technology that collects malware information from the Internet community at large and automates the data processing in real-time. This approach not only provides far greater security but also simplifies the protection process and detects malware that traditional security solutions miss.

Currently, Panda Security's Collective Intelligence network comprises 4 million computers. The knowledge accumulated in the system is composed of more than 11 million malware samples, and over 100 million analyzed programs. In 2007, more than 94 percent of all new threats that reached PandaLabs were detected through Collective Intelligence. At present, the system has a malware knowledge base of more than a hundred million bytes.
