MobiTV Reveals Details of Its Support for ATSC-M/H System for Mobile Broadcast

EMERYVILLE, Calif. and LAS VEGAS, April 14 PRNewswire — NAB Show — MobiTV, Inc., the leader in the delivery of mobile content and services, today revealed that it will be participating in and providing interactive capabilities for the consumer trials also announced today by the A-VSB Initiative. The consumer trials are planned for later in 2008 in one or more U.S. markets and will illustrate the business opportunities that A-VSB powered mobile TV can provide to the television ecosystem.

A-VSB is a proposed open standard and backward-compatible enhancement of the existing U.S. digital TV broadcasting system. It includes the A-VSB physical layer and global standard OMA BCAST application layer for mobile broadcasting, showing live local and national content as well as providing interactivity. A-VSB has been proposed to the ATSC for its upcoming mobile and handheld standard ATSC-M/H.

As a founding member of the A-VSB Initiative, MobiTV believes that a rich and ubiquitous interactive application framework will provide an unrivaled user experience for the ATSC-M/H system, allowing for the creation of elegant user experiences enhancing the broadcast video stream.

"In conjunction with mobile broadcast, we believe the optimum user experiences will include a combination of interactive and personalized services," said Kay Johansson, CTO, MobiTV. "Content providers, advertisers and ultimately viewers will all benefit from a more customized and rich mobile television experience."

Utilizing the Open Mobile Alliance Rich Media Environment (OMA-RME) application framework layer and a connected device such as a mobile handset or PC, MobiTV will provide an array of interactive applications to the field trial including voting, polling, mCommerce, interactive advertising, real-time audience measurement and key reporting capabilities that drive unique measurement. These enhancements will become indispensable in defining the next generation of mobile television applications and business models. MobiTV is working with world class partners including BitFlash and VisualOn, to create a ubiquitous reference standard and client platform ready for mass deployment across a wide variety of devices.
