American Lung Association Vows to Protect All Iowans from Secondhand Smoke

DES MOINES, Iowa, April 9, 2008 PRNewswire-USNewswire The American Lung Association of Iowa is excited by the passage of the Iowa Smoke-free Air Act, but vows to keep working until all Iowa workers are protected from secondhand smoke.

Though not perfect, the Iowa Smoke-free Air Act will protect an overwhelming majority of Iowans from secondhand smoke. "Politics is the art of the possible," said Roger Kuhle, President of the American Lung Association Leadership Board. "This is what was possible this year, but we are not finished. We will work until all Iowans are protected from the dangers of secondhand smoke and preemption is overturned as insurance against any weakening of this act in the future."

The Iowa Smoke-free Air Act will:

1.) Reduce the risk of lung cancer and heart disease in Iowa workers.

2.) Prompt smokers to think about quitting.

3.) Protect children and people with other lung diseases from harmful exposure to secondhand smoke.

The next job of the American Lung Association is to help businesses with the transition and to help smokers quit. Help is available to businesses through our office in Des Moines by calling 515-309-9507 or to smokers by calling the Lung HelpLine at 1-800-LUNGUSA.

The American Lung Association of Iowa will host a "Making Your Worksite Tobacco-Free" conference on April 29th in Coralville, IA to assist businesses making the transition to a healthier workplace.

The American Lung Association of Iowa is a statewide health organization supported by legions of dedicated volunteers, a professional staff and the state's leading experts in lung disease. We envision a world free of lung disease. Our mission is to make that vision a reality by preventing lung disease and promoting lung health.
