Morningstar Investment Services Announces Morningstar(R) Managed ETF Portfolios

CHICAGO, March 24 PRNewswire-FirstCall — Morningstar Investment Services, a registered investment advisor and wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. (Nasdaq: MORN), today introduced a managed account service consisting of a line-up of five actively managed portfolios that use exchange-traded funds to meet a wide range of investor needs.

Ameritas Investment Corp. and Centaurus Financial, two independent broker-dealer firms, recently selected Morningstar(R) Managed ETF Portfolios for use by their investment advisor representatives. Ameritas has 600 advisor representatives and Centaurus has 500. Both broker-dealers already offer Morningstar(R) Managed Mutual Fund Portfolios and Morningstar(R) Managed Portfolios(SM) Select Stock Baskets to their advisor representatives. All Morningstar managed portfolios, including these latest ETF portfolios, are available to financial advisors through multiple custodians.

"ETFs offer investors exposure to specific segments of the capital markets in a diversified, low cost, and tax efficient manner similar to index funds," said William Harding, director of research for Morningstar Investment Services. "Our new Managed ETF Portfolios combine these positive attributes of ETFs with our objective research, analysis, and portfolio management expertise in actively managing these portfolios to ensure they are well positioned given their risk and return objectives."

ETFs are investment vehicles that track a market index such as the S&P 500 or Morningstar U.S. Market Index. Like an open-end fund, ETFs are pooled investment fund vehicles. Unlike open-end funds, which price and trade once a day, ETFs trade on the major exchanges like individual stocks, are priced throughout the day, and can be bought and sold throughout the day for various prices that track the underlying value of the securities in the indexes that they are designed to match. Annual fees or expense ratios for ETFs are also often lower than those of comparable open-end mutual funds.

Morningstar Managed ETF Portfolios are actively managed using a "core and explore" investment process. This strategy combines "core" positions that provide exposure to broad asset classes in an efficient and low-cost manner with "explore" positions that seek to add value by taking advantage of opportunities in the markets. Selection of explore positions are based on a proprietary ETF-evaluation system developed by Morningstar Investment Services that combines macroeconomic and fundamental factors. Among other factors, the ETF-evaluation system assesses the composition, structure, and liquidity of individual ETFs, and marries it to research on fundamental factors such as valuation and growth drivers of the underlying securities.

Offered exclusively through financial advisors, Morningstar Managed ETF Portfolios are the latest offering from Morningstar Investment Services, a fee-based discretionary asset management service that includes a series of mutual fund and stock portfolios tailored to meet a range of investment strategies, time horizons, and risk levels. Morningstar Managed Portfolios enable advisors to focus on building relationships with their clients while using Morningstar Investment Services to manage clients' portfolios.
