On the Sierra Club discussion, the organization supports U.S. natural gas as a cleaner fuel than crude oil and coal, although it supports renewable fuels as the cleanest and most efficient fuel. Bruce Nilles will describe the Sierra Club's position and goals, with Denise Bode as interviewer.
Denise A. Bode is chief executive officer of American Clean Skies Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Chesapeake Energy Corp. chairman Aubrey McClendon to promote clean energy, energy efficiency and the role of natural gas in creating a clean energy future for America. Bode is a nationally recognized energy-policy expert. In her prior role as one of Oklahoma's three statewide elected Corporation Commissioners, she had oversight of more than 70 percent of the state's economy, including oil and gas E&P, utilities, transportation, above- and below-ground storage tanks, and environmental matters. During her two terms in office, she added commercial windpower to the state's energy portfolio-rules that opened the gas market for expansion of service, on electricity reliability and providing great security for critical energy infrastructure. She was also president of the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) in Washington for seven years.
Bruce Nilles heads up Sierra Club's National Coal Campaign, a campaign that is working to move America beyond coal and curb global-warming pollution from the electric sector. Before he joined Sierra Club in 2002, Nilles worked as a staff attorney with Earthjustice, a non-profit law firm in San Francisco, and between 1996 and 2000, he served as counsel to the Assistant Attorney General of the U.S. Justice Department's Environment and Natural Resources Division.
