American Humane Appoints Mabel McKinney-Browning to Board of Directors

DENVER, March 13 PRNewswire-USNewswire — The American Humane Association announced today that Mabel McKinney-Browning of Chicago has been elected to its board of directors for a three-year term.

McKinney-Browning is the director of the American Bar Association Division for Public Education. She brings more than 30 years of professional experience in education and youth service to American Humane's board of directors.

The Division for Public Education's mission is to promote public understanding of law and its role in society. To accomplish this, it conducts programs and develops resources to educate diverse public constituencies about the law and legal issues. As director, McKinney-Browning oversees a wide-ranging publications program, including Insights on Law and Society, a magazine for secondary school teachers of law, history and civics, and Preview of United States Supreme Court Cases, a magazine by legal experts that previews every case before the U.S. Supreme Court prior to oral argument.

Currently, McKinney-Browning also serves as chair of the executive committee for the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, a nonprofit, nonpartisan national alliance of more than 40 organizations, whose mission is to expand and support civic learning in American schools. She has also held volunteer leadership positions with the National Council for the Social Studies and the Social Science Education Consortium.

A national leader and frequent public speaker in the fields of law-related education and civic education, she has written and edited numerous articles on law, civics and social studies education at the elementary and secondary levels. McKinney-Browning has conducted hundreds of workshops and training sessions and consulted with school districts, bar associations and community organizations. She is currently serving as an international education consultant for the American Bar Association (ABA) Rule of Law Initiative, developing a new civic education curriculum in Qatar.

McKinney-Browning joined the American Bar Association's education staff in 1979. Before assuming her current position in 1993, she also served as staff director for the ABA Special Committee on Youth Education for Citizenship. Prior to coming to the ABA, she taught at the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. McKinney-Browning received an undergraduate degree from Chicago State University and a doctorate in education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
