Willoughby Student Wins Ohio Education Association Black History Month Essay Contest

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 14 PRNewswire-USNewswire — Marlon Richmond, a sixth-grade student at Willoughby Middle School, was honored Thursday, February 14, for his winning essay on the topic "What does freedom mean to me as we honor Black History Month?"

Richmond, a student of Ohio Education Association (OEA) member Bonnie Tager, won the Black History Month essay contest sponsored by the OEA and Clear Channel Radio. Ohio students in grades 4-6 were eligible to compete.

As part of its recognition of Black History Month, OEA broadcast a special radio commercial in which Richmond read an excerpt from his essay.

OEA President Patricia Frost-Brooks visited Willoughby Middle School to present Richmond with a $50 check, a book about African-American history and gifts for his classmates.

The essay contest provides students with the opportunity to learn more about African-American contributions and the achievement of freedom against many odds. It also showcases the students' creativity and talent.

The Ohio Education Association represents 130,000 teachers, faculty members and support professionals in Ohio's public schools, colleges and universities.
