Broadcom Demonstrates Industry Leading Gaming Performance With VideoCore(R) III Multimedia Processor
The enhanced mobile gaming demonstrations, utilizing Futuremark performance benchmarks and based on the Broadcom(R) BCM2727 VideoCore III multimedia processor, will be performed at this week's 2008 Mobile World Congress in
The collaboration between Broadcom and Futuremark has produced several OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics benchmarks including "Nature," "
OpenGL ES is a mobile optimized subset standard of the industry's most widely deployed 2D and 3D OpenGL graphics application programming interface. While the Open GL ES 2.0 standard offers more visually realistic mobile games and improved portability across mobile platforms, it is highly data intensive and difficult to achieve optimal processing performance at power levels appropriate for cell phones. The benchmark demonstrations at Mobile World Congress and Game Developers Conference deliver an incredibly realistic gaming experience on mobile devices when enabled (or powered) by Broadcom's VideoCore III multimedia processor.
"While OpenGL ES 2.0 shows much promise, mobile hardware to date has only been able to render realistic games at several frames per second, which is clearly not viable for future applications," said Petri Talala, Vice President of Mobile Business, Futuremark Corporation. "We are extremely impressed with the performance and capabilities of Broadcom's BCM2727 processor and VideoCore III architecture, which truly brings the mobile gaming experience to the next level."
"The OpenGL ES 2.0 standard is critical for enabling game developers to quickly migrate high quality games to mobile platforms," said
BCM2727 VideoCore III Technical Information
The Broadcom BCM2727 mobile multimedia processor features on-chip advanced 2D and 3D graphics accelerators and efficient audio technology that provide a rich viewing and listening experience ideally suited for gaming applications on mobile handsets. The ultra-low power graphics pipeline is optimized for efficient hardware acceleration of OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0 and Open VG graphics standards and supports graphics rich 3D games with rendering performance up to 32 million triangles per second.
Providing unprecedented levels of mobile multimedia processing to mobile devices, the BCM2727 features digital video capture, high resolution still photography, and advanced 2D and 3D mobile gaming. It is the industry's first low power multimedia processor for cell phones and portable media players that enables 720p high definition video camcorder and playback using H.264 compression. The BCM2727 also supports an up to 12 megapixel digital camera and delivers high performance yet ultra-low power 3D graphics for a world-class gaming experience. HD video, 3D games and high resolution digital pictures can be displayed at top quality on full-sized HD televisions and monitors using an on-chip industry standard HDMI interface.
This groundbreaking multimedia technology adds a very significant competitive advantage to Broadcom's mobile platforms portfolio, enabling next generation cell phones to offer a quantum improvement in mobile audio, video, imaging, navigation and gaming experiences — all with similar battery life and size when compared to today's compact multimedia handsets. The BCM2727 processor also supports over fifty multimedia standards, formats, codecs and resolutions, and provides the broadest mobile multimedia content support in the industry. Its extremely low power enables over 6 hours of gaming from a standard cell phone battery, with the chip (including graphics memory) consuming only 130mW.
