MISSOULA, Mont.,
Wine and Words took flight when Doherty moved from
Fearing she'd drown in a sea of hiking boots, wool socks and fleece, Doherty decided to throw a party. But not just any party. This would be a party of wine and more important, of words. Her guests would imbibe the wine and share the words, and it would all be wonderfully literary. She braced herself as she broached the theme with her husband, but rather than balk at the idea, he embraced it. Apparently, he and his outdoor river/mountain guide friends were well-versed at sharing prose with colleagues and students. "It's not like we're watching television out there," he said.
And so Wine and Words was born. This week, it debuts at sixminutestyle.com. Adding to the party theme, this week's video features Signature Cocktails (think green tea martini and pomepolitan).
Six Minute Style
Part video program, part lifestyle magazine, Six Minute Style was created for people interested in cooking, entertaining, wines, travel and new products — but short on time.
A new video each week greets visitors. Past episodes have included a simple, yet elegant,
A click on the Travel header leads visitors to various destinations with tips on where to stay, what to do, and what to see. Doherty rounds out the articles with photos, restaurant reviews, and quick links to other sites.
And that first Wine and Words party? According to Doherty, it was a huge success. "Our guests took the time to pick out some really unexpected wines," she said. "But what really blew me away were the readings."
There was a beloved Calvin and Hobbes cartoon strip, a piece of Buddhist writing (read under the stars with Buddhist monks chanting in the background via a CD), a greeting card that triggered tears, and the excerpts from books that gave surprising glimpses into the guests' personalities and interests. Two friends even dressed as '60s beatniks to share a bit of Jack Kerouac.
