Kroger Pink Tag Campaign Raises $137,500 for Breast Cancer Research and Awareness at Karmanos Cancer Institute
DETROIT, Jan. 23 PRNewswire-USNewswire — The Kroger Company and its participating vendors raised $137,500 during its 2007 pink tag campaign to benefit breast cancer research and awareness at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.
"Through the dedication of our vendors and purchases by our loyal customers, we are proud to make this significant contribution to such an important cause," said Rick Going, president of The Kroger Co. Michigan Division. "The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is a steadfast organization, and we hope this donation will aid them in their mission to prevent, detect and eradicate breast cancer."
Throughout the year, Detroit-area Kroger stores invited customers to shop the pink tags to support breast cancer research. Kroger teamed up with breast cancer-supporting brands to offer 1,300 pink-tagged items. When customers purchased the pink-tagged brands or the limited quantity pink shopping bags, Kroger dedicated a portion of the proceeds to the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

Kroger's pink tag campaign is a corporate-wide program that benefits breast cancer awareness and research in participating Kroger markets.

Breast cancer is a type of cancer where cells in the breast tissue divide and grow without the usual controls on cell death and cell division. One in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, making it the most common cancer among women. It is the second leading cause of cancer death among women (after lung cancer) and the leading cause of cancer death among young women. Being a woman and getting older are the most important risk factors for breast cancer. Although diet, exercise and other lifestyle choices, as well as some forms of treatment, may help reduce the risk of breast cancer, there is no way to prevent it. Only 5 to 10 percent of breast cancers can be linked to a strong family history. Most women with breast cancer have no known risk factors.
