AT&T Expanding Wireless Coverage in Connecticut; Investing More Than $35 Million This Year in the State's Wireless Network

ROCKY HILL, Conn., Aug. 23 PRNewswire-FirstCall — AT&T (NYSE: T) has announced a planned investment of more than $35 million in the Connecticut wireless network in 2007. This will bring AT&T's three-year investment in its Connecticut wireless network to more than $105 million. This year's planned investment includes the addition of new cell sites, expanded high speed wireless broadband service (3G) and approximately 150 new radios to more than 70 cell sites throughout the state. It also includes new hardware cabinets and power amplifiers to increase capacity.

In the past year, AT&T has also invested heavily in its wireline network throughout the state. This investment includes a portion of its planned multi-year $336 million investment, which was announced last summer, in its next-generation network. The enhanced network enables a new consumer video offering as well as improved broadband access.

Matt Nemerson, the president and CEO of the Connecticut Technology Council, commented: "Connecticut's ability to compete globally has long been based on our ability to provide our citizens and firms with an outstanding infrastructure. More than a hundred years ago, we were home to the very first telephone switchboard, and today's investments in the speed and ubiquity of connectivity in the state are vital to the economy. This significant AT&T commitment to Connecticut will benefit consumers and businesses alike as they seek to connect through wireless mobile networks."

The 2007 wireless enhancements focus primarily on expanding the network's voice capacity and enhancing the EDGE Data network, which is providing increased download speeds for consumers. The expansion of the voice and data network gives the company additional bandwidth to support its growing customer base and increased network voice and data usage.

This year, AT&T has already turned on three new cell sites in the state, including two sites in Hamden — one that provides coverage along the Route 10 and Route 40 connector and another that enhances the wireless service on Route 10 between Hamden and Cheshire. A third site, in Barkhamsted, now provides coverage along Route 44 east of Winsted.

Five additional cell sites planned for Connecticut this year will enhance wireless coverage for AT&T customers in a number of areas, including: Greenwich, on the Merritt Parkway between exits 28 and 29, as well as on Route 120A in Greenwich and parts of Westchester County in New York; Ridgefield along Route 33; Hartland along Route 20; and Ledyard within the community of Gales Ferry and along Route 12.

AT&T has delivered dramatic change in Connecticut — a direct result of the company's continuing efforts to expand and enhance its network operations and the synergies that come from being part of the world's largest communications company. Through last year's introduction of the blazing-fast 3G network, customers now have access to DSL-type speeds for their laptops and access to the latest entertainment, news and weather programming through AT&T Video and AT&T Music. AT&T's 3G network also supports new services, such as Video Share, which allows customers to share live, real-time video while having a conversation on their wireless phones.

AT&T's current 3G footprint in the state covers I-95 and the Merritt Parkway between the New York border and New Haven, as well as along Route 91 from New Haven to just north of Hartford. Access to 3G is also available at Bradley International Airport, the UConn-Storrs Campus, downtown New London, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos and the area surrounding ESPN headquarters in Bristol.

Later this year, AT&T plans to roll out expanded 3G wireless network coverage in New London, providing customers with continuous 3G coverage from the New York border to the Rhode Island border.

"The versatility of our network is unsurpassed — in fact — no other wireless network is more reliable in the state of Connecticut," said Steve Krom, AT&T's vice president/general manager for wireless operations in New England. "Our goal is to ensure that AT&T customers have the very best wireless experience possible — which includes unmatched coverage and quality of service."

"Connecticut consumers also have access to one of the most comprehensive wireline broadband networks in the nation," Krom added. "Providing high-quality wireless and wireline communications services to our customers and then converging those technologies is a priority for AT&T today."

AT&T diligently monitors the quality and coverage of its network. In addition to third-party vendors that assess the company's network performance, AT&T wireless network engineers constantly monitor the network and drive tens of thousands of miles across Connecticut each year to ensure that the network is operating at peak efficiency.
