OXFORD, Maine-(Business Wire)-October 9, 2008 - The Olympia Group announced today that it has selected the town of Oxford as the host community for its Oxford Highlands Resort-Spa-Casino. The Olympia Group is proposing the construction of a 184 million dollar four-season facility.
Dean Harrold, vice chairman of Olympia Gaming, called the town of Oxford the “Corridor of Opportunity†and a gateway to Maine’s western mountain and ski region. In addition, Harrold said that the region’s plentiful workforce was taken into consideration in the Olympia Group’s selection of the host town. Additionally, Olympia has received strong support from the community and the municipal leadership of Oxford.
On October 2nd, in a unanimous vote, the Town of Oxford’s Board of Selectmen passed a resolution to support a resort casino, pending approval in a statewide referendum on November 4th. The town’s Economic Development Advisory Committee also voted unanimously to support the project.
“We are thrilled with the warm welcome we are receiving from the citizens of Oxford and the town’s municipal leaders,†said Harrold. “We know this location will be a great host community for us, and, in turn, we will be great neighbors to the people of Oxford.â€
Yesterday, the Olympia Group released an independent economic impact study that detailed the economic benefit to the region and state. According to the report, in addition to creating 1,277 new jobs during the construction phase, the resort casino will generate 907 full-time and part-time jobs upon final build-out. The casino will support a $32.5 million payroll, and earn $164.1 million in total annual revenues. $69 million additional revenue will be paid to the State of Maine each year.
The Olympia Group is actively seeking a site within the town of Oxford, and several properties are under consideration at this time.
