Tears, Smiles at The Big Spin(R) Show
SACRAMENTO, Calif.-(Business Wire)-October 4, 2008 - Sandra Falcon, a kindergarten teacher from Downey, walked away from the wheel with both tears and a smile. But the story of the California Lottery ticket purchase didn’t start and end with her. The ticket that took her to the Big Spin was first purchased by her husband. He didn’t think that his sort of luck was the kind needed to win big. He told Lottery officials that he turned to his wife and said “You’re lucky, you go.â€
The tears in her eyes appeared to indicate that she and her husband would pursue a dream or two with the $75,000 won. When talking to California Lottery officials, she knew exactly how the money would be spent. “We’ll invest it, help family, buy a bigger home and we’ve never gone to Las Vegas.†The grand total won by Falcon and all other contestants on this week’s episode of the Big Spin was $136,509.
Mireya Ramirez, a teller from Calipatria, was both nervous and anxious before making her way up to the wheel. Before spinning the wheel, she told California Lottery officials, “I am tired of my apartment. You can’t have a dog in our apartment. You know? I would like to put a down payment on a house and then my family can get a dog.†$25,000 will now go toward those dreams.

More than 95 cents of every Lottery dollar is returned to the community in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retail commissions. The California Lottery contributes at least 34 cents of every dollar that players spend on Lottery products to public education and returns more than 50 percent of sales to players in the form of prizes. Since its inception in 1985, the Lottery has contributed more than $20 billion to California schools out of total sales of nearly $55 billion. Retailers benefit too, earning $3.5 billion in compensation since 1985.
