There is a tradition of medical device manufacturing in Slovakia, but domestic production is increasingly unable to compete with Western imports. The healthcare sector is undergoing continuous reform, with bed numbers falling annually. However, Slovakian hospitals remain largely unreconstructed and there is a great demand for new medical equipment. The private sector is also struggling to expand as the government has passed legislation which restricts the competitiveness of both private hospitals and health insurers. Under Ivan Valentoviè, the Health Minister until 3rd June 2008, private health insurers were banned from making profits and were given no choice but to channel extra funds back into the healthcare system. The process of privatising healthcare facilities was halted and private hospitals failed to make it onto a list of hospitals which were guaranteed contracts with state-run health insurers. The rate of privatisation within the healthcare sector is expected to remain slow under the ruling Smer-SD party, which is led by the popular prime minister, Robert Fico.
In 2008, the Slovak market for medical equipment and supplies is estimated at US$402 million, or US$73 per capita. This market size is comparable to Slovenia; in per capita terms, the market is similar to Hungary. Slovakia accounts for just 0.2% of the total world market.
