California Department of Housing and Community Development Celebrates the Signing of AB 2494 - the Housing Related Parks Program

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-(Business Wire)-October 2, 2008 - The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) applauds the signing of AB 2494, the Housing Related Parks Program, by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The legislation, authored by Assemblymember Anna Caballero, will create incentives and reward local government for building affordable housing with grant money for much needed parks in their communities.

"This money will reward communities by enhancing the quality of life in these neighborhoods. We hope that all of our communities can benefit from more parks and more affordable housing," said Lynn L. Jacobs, Director of HCD.

The funds come from Proposition 1C, the $2.85 billion housing bond passed by the voters in November 2006, a part of the Governor's Strategic Growth Plan. $200 million will be available in total program funds which will be awarded in six annual rounds beginning in 2009.

The Housing Related Parks Program will reward local governments for approving much needed affordable housing for families and workers in their communities. The funds will be used for the creation, development or rehabilitation of park and recreation facilities. Those projects may include acquisition of land, the creation of sports fields, play areas, play structures, gardens and landscaping.

"The Housing Related Parks Program is a perfect example of HCD's goal to partner with local governments to address our statewide housing needs," said Director Jacobs.

HCD provides leadership, policies and programs to preserve and expand safe and affordable housing opportunities and promote strong communities for all Californians. The Department also supports increasing the supply of housing, especially affordable housing and works to improve the state's housing conditions and the health and safety of its residents. As the lead housing department, HCD is part of the state Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
