Chief Counsel Sullivan Announces Resignation

WASHINGTON-(Business Wire)-October 2, 2008 - Chief Counsel for Advocacy Thomas M. Sullivan today announced that he will step down as head of the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Sullivan will conclude his current government service on October 24, 2008.

In a letter of resignation to President George W. Bush, Sullivan said, “It has been an incredible honor to serve in your Administration” and that he takes “great pride in the Office of Advocacy’s achievements over the past seven years.”

Sullivan noted that the achievements of the office include:

Working with the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs to filter out more than $65 billion in new regulatory costs by monitoring federal agency compliance with the Regulatory Flexibility Act.
Successfully convincing state officials to adopt a similar approach. Small business regulatory flexibility has been considered by over 37 legislatures and is being implemented in over 22 states since Advocacy introduced model legislation in 2002.
Gaining tremendous respect for research on entrepreneurship by attracting scholars, public officials, bloggers, reporters, professors, and policy experts to in-depth analyses found in over 25 reports produced annually.

Sullivan concluded his letter saying that he leaves government for the private sector, “knowing that I followed your counsel to always remember that my boss is the American taxpayer and to leave government better off for my service.”

The Office of Advocacy, the “small business watchdog” of the federal government, examines the role and status of small business in the economy and independently represents the views of small business to federal agencies, Congress, and the President. It is the source for small business statistics presented in user-friendly formats, and it funds research into small business issues.
