GKN Driveline Components to Be on 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
TOCHIGI, Japan-(Business Wire)-October 1, 2008 - GKN Driveline Torque Technology will supply key driveline components, including an upgraded power transfer unit (PTU), for the all-new, highly-acclaimed 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS.
Known as the “Active Center Differential,†GKN Driveline’s PTU provides industry-leading torque capacity to the high-end version of the 2009 Lancer Evolution. Equipped with an enhanced multi-plate limited slip differential (LSD) with active yaw control (AYC), the car achieves 311 foot-pounds (422 Nm) of torque at 3,500 rpm or for European Union specifications, 270 ft.-lbs. (366 Nm) at 3,500 rpm.
“For the 2009 Lancer Evolution, Mitsubishi Motors wanted to significantly improve the car’s drive and handling dynamics with an advanced, cutting-edge driveline system,†said Graeme Walford, managing director, GKN Driveline Torque Technology. “The PTU featured on the Lancer Evolution enables increased power and torque, while fitting within the same package size as the previous model."
GKN Driveline’s high-performance PTU manages more than 590 ft.-lbs. of torque. Compact and lightweight, the unit includes built-in helical LSD for the front wheels and an electronically-controlled, hydraulically-actuated clutch pack in the transmission that acts on the center differential.
"The new Lancer Evolution unit is the highest-performance PTU in the world," Graeme Walford added. “GKN Driveline offers unique products for our customers seeking advanced vehicle dynamics in such competition-bred cars.â€
GKN Driveline’s rear multi-plate LSD active yaw control significantly enhances the dynamics of the Lancer Evolution while improving traction and stability. GKN Driveline’s highly durable LSD provides a superior response and higher mechanical efficiency.
