The Difference a Day Makes: Macy's Raises More Than $9 Million with National Shop For A Cause Event

NEW YORK-(Business Wire)-September 24, 2008 - Macy’s (NYSE:M) today announced that it successfully raised more than $9 million with this year’s third annual national “Shop For A Cause†charity shopping event, bringing the total raised over three years to more than $27 million. The event was held on Saturday, September 20 in all Macy’s stores and on macys.com to help raise awareness and support for local charity organizations across the U.S. The first nationally coordinated Shop For A Cause event was held in 2006.

“We are elated to report another very successful Shop For A Cause event, raising more than $9 million in one day to support important charity work in cities and towns around the country,†said Peter Sachse, president, Macy's Corporate Marketing. “With a 150-year history of ‘giving back’ to our communities, we continue to be overwhelmed by what can be accomplished with innovative partnerships between companies, charities and customers. Macy’s Shop For A Cause is resounding proof of that fact.â€

Through the “Shop for a Cause†program, Macy’s provided shopping passes to local charities in all of its markets around the country, including to the American Heart Association as a part of Macy’s national support for the Go Red For Women movement and to the Family Violence Prevention Fund as an aspect of Macy’s national support for the RESPECT! Campaign. The shopping passes were then sold by the charitable organizations for $5 each. The organizations kept 100 percent of the shopping pass proceeds. Pass holders redeemed their passes at any Macy’s store or online at macys.com on September 20 to receive 20 percent off most men’s, women’s, kids, and accessories merchandise and 10 percent off most home items. Shopping passes were also sold at macys.com and at our stores leading up to and on the day of the event, with all of the proceeds for those passes also distributed to charitable organizations.
