SUPERVALU Pharmacies Steps Up National Flu Prevention Program

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill.-(Business Wire)-September 24, 2008 - SUPERVALU Pharmacies this flu season will make it easier to hurdle some common barriers to preventative health care measures such as flu immunization.

Beginning September 28, specially trained and certified SUPERVALU pharmacists will be available to administer both the needle-free FluMist^® nasal spray and traditional flu vaccinations during regular pharmacy hours. For convenience, these vaccines will be available on a walk-in basis or by appointment at most SUPERVALU pharmacy locations. And, the company will offer special flu shot clinics in most SUPERVALU stores, at various times through November 1.

SUPERVALU Pharmacies operate under 11 retail brands, including Acme Sav-on Pharmacy, Albertsons Sav-on Pharmacy, Albertsons Osco Pharmacy, bigg’s Pharmacy, Cub Pharmacy, Farm Fresh Pharmacy, Jewel-Osco Pharmacy, Shaw’s Osco Pharmacy, Shop’n Save Pharmacy, Shop ‘n Save Osco Pharmacy and Shoppers Pharmacy.

In addition to the two immunization options and flexible appointment schedules that include evenings and weekends, SUPERVALU Pharmacies also has reduced the price of its flu shots, compared to last year.

“Our aim is to make it easier for customers to see both the individual and public health benefits to getting a flu shot,” Dimos said. “By removing some of the obstacles, we feel we can empower our customers to make wise and healthy choices.”

According to CDC estimates, influenza is related to an average of 36,000 deaths and 226,000 hospitalizations every year. Some researchers estimate that influenza is responsible for up to 12 percent of all work absences due to illness.
