Utah Single Mom Foundation Launches New Website

SALT LAKE CITY-(Business Wire)-September 4, 2008 - The Single Mom Foundation of Utah announced today the launch of their new website, www.singlemomfoundation.org. The website was designed as a tool for single moms to help them develop long-term self-reliance through gaining a quality education.

The website is based on research and analysis conducted in 2007 by the Economic Self-Reliance Center at BYU, to determine what factors most contribute to the success of single moms. It was found that gaining a quality education means greater earning potential, job security, more affordable health insurance, and stable housing.

“Our main goal at SMF is to make education accessible to single moms across the state,” said Rebecca Biggs, Managing Director of the Single Mom Foundation. “By doing so, we can improve the lives of women, advance new generations of scholars and create hope for a better future for single moms, their children and the communities in which they live.”

The website provides information for prospective single mom students at any stage in their education. With resources for earning a GED, trade certificate, associates, bachelors or advanced degrees, Single Mom Foundation is helping address the significant need for adult education in Utah.

In addition to the website’s free education tools such as self-assessments, career planning, selecting a school, and understanding financial aid, the Single Mom Foundation website helps single moms connect to a specific contact person and available school and community resources. This link to campus and community support is especially critical in rural areas where single moms have limited access to government agencies and fewer resources. The goal is not only helping a single mom get into school, but making sure she has access to available local services to assist them with the inevitable barriers that occur so that she can be successful through completion.
