Classic Cars Cruise in to The Henry Ford for Old Car Festival
DEARBORN, Mich.-(Business Wire)-August 26, 2008 - Join us in celebrating an important year at The Henry Ford as its 58th annual Old Car Festival cruises into the streets of Greenfield Village, September 6-7, in honor of the centennial of the groundbreaking Model T. Old Car Festival features over 750 cars from the 1890s to 1932, including nearly 200 Model Ts. This event is free with membership or admission to Greenfield Village; admission is $20 adults, $19 seniors and $14 youth. Children under five and members are free. Make the most of your visit on Saturday, September 6, as Greenfield Village extends its hours until 9 pm for fantastic fireworks and entertainment. Also featured on Saturday night will be a concert by The Hotel Savarine Society Orchestra and a Gaslight Parade of Cars, where you can experience the sights of hundreds of pre-1932 automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and bicycles as they take to the streets of Greenfield Village after dark amid an array of gaslight, kerosene, and early electric lamps.
Learn more about the car that put America on wheels in lectures with Bob Casey, curator of Transportation at The Henry Ford and author of The Model T: A Centennial History and Lindsay Brooke, Senior Editor of “Automotive Engineering International†and author of Model T Ford, as they share their vast knowledge of the Model T. These lectures will be hosted at the Village Pavilion by Lindsay Brooke on Saturday at 1 pm and by Bob Casey on Sunday at 1 pm. Both lectures will be followed by book signings.
Other special events during Old Car Festival include:
- Recollections of the Winners – New York to Paris Race 1908: Join Jeff Mahl, great-grandson of George Schuster, driver of the winning car, for an amazing tale of the New York to Paris race. Won by an American Thomas Flyer automobile and its American crew, this victory was another milestone for the newly emerging American automobile industry. Saturday and Sunday 2:30pm, in the Village Pavilion.
- Benson Ford Research Center Open House: Take this opportunity to see the treasures and talk to the experts the Benson Ford Research Center has to offer. Saturday - 9am-5pm
- Simply Gershwin: Celebrate the beloved music of legendary composer George Gershwin in this lively 30-minute music and comedy revue at Town Hall. Saturday and Sunday - 11:30am, 12:45pm, 2:15pm & 3:30pm (plus 5pm & 6pm Saturday)
- Pass-In-Review Parades: Watch comfortably from the grandstand near the Thomas Edison statue as each of our vehicles passes by while noted automotive historians Marty Bufalini, Bob Casey, David Liepelt, Glenn Miller and Ross Hill offer expert commentary. Saturday - 10:30am, 11:30am, Noon, and 1pm; Sunday - 11am, 11:30am, 1pm, and 4pm
- Bicycle Parade: Join historians Ross Hill and the Wheelmen for this cycling show near the Thomas Edison statue. Saturday - 10:30am
- Bicycle Games: Good, old-fashioned fun hosted by the Wheelmen in front of the Wright Cycle Shop. Saturday and Sunday - 2pm
- 1920s Auto Touring: Join historian Daniel Hershberger next to Scotch Settlement School, as he discusses the power and styling of the vehicles of the 1920s. Saturday and Sunday - 12:30pm and 3:30pm
- Car Games: Cheer on with the crowd at Walnut Grove during this competition of early motoring skills. Saturday and Sunday - 11:30am-4pm
- Automobile demonstrations: Discover how different types of antique automobiles are operated, as demonstrated by historian Wade Leonard at Walnut Grove. Saturday and Sunday - Noon, 1pm, 2:30pm & 3:30pm
- Canadian Model T Assembly Team: Witness the incredible feat of five men assembling and driving a Model T in ten minutes or less! Saturday and Sunday - 12:30pm and 3pm
- Junior Driver’s Ed: It’s never too early to learn! Little feet put the pedal to the metal in reproduction pedal cars from the 1950s and 1960s near the Roundhouse. All day Saturday and Sunday (until 7pm Saturday)
