Warren Banner Joins ArborGen as Director, Varietal Manufacturing

SUMMERVILLE, S.C.-(Business Wire)-July 28, 2008 - ArborGen, LLC, a global leader in forest tree improvement technologies, announced that Warren Banner has joined the company as director, varietal manufacturing. Banner will be responsible for scaling up ArborGen U.S. varietal production to meet the strong and growing market demand for its value-added pine and hardwood trees.

Banner comes to ArborGen with extensive experience in vegetative tissue culture production, scale-up of production systems and building large-scale supply chains to serve broad market demand. His work has taken him all over the world. Banner held previous positions as director of operations for Northwest Horticulture LLC in Mabton, Wash.; and general manager and president of Ball FloraPlant in West Chicago, Ill., where he built the company from a start-up division to become an industry leading provider of vegetative ornamental plants.

"Warren's global expertise in lean-flow manufacturing, large scale greenhouse production, and proven success in increasing yield from manufacturing through the supply chain will enable ArborGen to expand our varietal business," says Wayne Barfield, general manager, U.S. commercial operations, for ArborGen. "Varietal production is an important focus for ArborGen in providing landowners with the best trees with ideal traits to maximize growth and yield and to optimize the value landowner returns."

Through patented varietal propagation technology and the ArborGen Testing Service, the company produces and tests identical pine seedlings from proprietary germplasm, as well as that of other leading wood producing companies and universities, to develop top performing varieties with traits desired by land owners, growers and wood processors.

In addition to producing bare root and container seedlings, ArborGen coordinates field tests on multiple sites in various tree production zones. ArborGen has delivered more than 9,000 varieties for customer testing on specific sites throughout the southeastern U.S. and South America. From these tests, customers can select trees that are resistant to disease and stress and are ideally suited for their specific forest conditions. The company also produces and sells a large volume of varietals through its Australasia operations.
