Vintage Base Ball Clubs Duke It Out in Sixth Annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball, August 2-3 in Greenfield Village

DEARBORN, Mich.-(Business Wire)-July 25, 2008 - Get in on the action and excitement as The Henry Ford presents America's favorite pastime the old-fashioned way, at the Sixth Annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball, August 2-3 in Greenfield Village. This unique event is free with membership or admission to Greenfield Village. Tickets are $20 adults, $19 seniors (ages 62 and up), $14 youth (ages 5-12), and free for children under five.

As always, the Sixth Annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball, (spelled as two words into the early 1900s), will feature Greenfield Village's own teams, the La-De-Dahs and the Nationals, battling for the title against the top vintage clubs from across America. Adding new excitement to the tournament this year are the Wyandotte Stars and the Saginaw Old Golds, in addition to 14 returning clubs. Both the Stars and Old Golds are recently revived 19th century teams with a strong history of camaraderie, spirit and tradition.

No gloves, no spitting, no cussing, and fair underhanded pitches are just a few of the rules for this game of base ball set by "Haney's Base Ball Book of Reference." The Greenfield Village tournament games are played according to the rulebook, which was originally published in 1867. It was during that same year that 24 teams took to the field in Detroit, as the city hosted the first World's Base Ball Tournament.

This year the tournament will feature a special "Pitch Over Time" dramatic presentation, great hands-on baseball activities and appearances by two 1968 World Series Champions. The weekend's festivities will include:

— Historic Base Ball Games: Ongoing weekend tournament games will begin at 9:30am, and will run until 6pm on Saturday and 5pm on Sunday.

— Dramatic Presentation: "A Pitch Over Time" dramatic presentation of base ball from the beginning through the Dead-Ball era.

— Musical Entertainment: Get serenaded by the premier nineteenth-century sounds of the Dodworth Saxhorn Band, Saturday at 7pm, in addition to other musical performers throughout the weekend in Greenfield Village.

— Meet Tigers '68 Champions: Two 1968 World Series Champion Tigers will be on site to meet with visitors and autograph Tiger's memorabilia. Meet and greets will take place on Saturday with Jim Northrup, and Sunday with Bill Freehan, from 11:30am-12:30pm.

— Blast to the Past: On Saturday and Sunday, visitors can get hands-on with some historic base ball games of their own. Step into the pre-Civil War era and play the Massachusetts Rules stick-and-ball game that preceded the game of 1867. Test your 1867 base ball skills by trying a hand at pitching and running the bases, or learn and play the game of cricket, another early stick-and-ball game.

Historic base ball games are played on Walnut Grove and Hawthorn Glade in Greenfield Village every Saturday and Sunday at 1:30pm, through August 24. All games are free with membership or Greenfield Village admission. Greenfield Village is open seven days a week, 9:30am-5pm.
