After starting his career as a lawyer for a New York investment bank, Model, Rowland and Company, Bill Brodsky joined the American Stock exchange, where he rose to the position of Executive Vice president for Operations. In 1982, he joined the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, where he was later named President and CEO in 1985. He held that position until 1997, when he joined the Chicago Board Options exchange where he still is today.
Brodsky claims that technology and education are the biggest reasons why options have grown so much in the past few years. Automation and computers have played a prominent role in the growth of options volume. He also believes that people have simply not been educated enough in options. Whether they are institutional or retail, traders have learned more about options and how to use them efficiently, which has a direct correlation with the increase in the volume of options traded.
Brodsky also believes that there is a big future ahead for options. He claims the "pie is getting larger," not only because current traders are trading more, but more people are getting into options and want a piece of that pie. Asia could also be a future boost for the options market, since he says there is a lot of interest coming from countries such as Korea and China.
