4th Annual Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research Accepting Nominations

BETHESDA, Md.-(Business Wire)-July 1, 2008 - The National Foundation for Cancer Research announced that it is accepting nominations for the science prize to honor their co-founder, Nobel-Laureate, Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi. The 4th Annual Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research provides a $25,000 cash prize, awarded to a distinguished individual who has demonstrated significant advancement in the field of cancer research, specifically through basic cancer research.

The prestigious award honors outstanding scientific achievement in the war against cancer while celebrating and recognizing leading researchers who are making extraordinary contributions in the field of cancer research. It is also intended to promote public awareness of the importance of cancer research and encourage increased investment in the resources needed to accelerate progress in cancer research.

Previous winners of the Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research include: Harold Dvorak, M.D., of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, Webster K. Cavenee, Ph.D., Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and Distinguished Professor at the University of California, San Diego, and Carlo Croce, Ph.D. of The Ohio State University who will chair the selection committee for 2008.

Named after Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi—the recipient of the 1937 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine for his study on Vitamin C and cell respiration—this award extends the vision of pursuing a cure for cancer through encouraging scientific innovation and fostering collaboration. Beyond his laboratory, Szent-Gyorgyi was a leading advocate for developing resources to provide scientists with the financial support necessary to pursue novel cancer research ideas. In 1973, he co-founded the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) with entrepreneur Franklin C. Salisbury. That effort and vision has now led to directing more than $250 million in support of cancer research.

Nominations for the Szent-Gyorgyi Award for Progress in Cancer Research may be submitted by any scientist, business executive or member of the academic community or institution uniquely familiar with the individual and/or the work they are nominating the individual for. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Recipients will have made discoveries resulting in, or leading toward, notable contributions to cancer prevention, diagnosis, or treatment.
