Dangerous Insect Found South of Border, Threatens California Citrus Industry

-(Business Wire)-June 27, 2008 - California Citrus Research Board: -0- *T The Story: Yesterday, the Mexican government confirmed what the California Department of Food and Agriculture feared: the Asian Citrus Psyllid, which can deliver a death sentence for California citrus trees, has been discovered in three locations 1.9 miles south of the California border in Tijuana, Mexico. The psyllid is a carrier of a disease that has led to the destruction of the citrus industry in Florida and in other parts of the world, including Asia, India and parts of the Middle East and Brazil - and it threatens to do the same thing in our state, if it is not stopped. The public can help. California is the number one economic citrus state in the nation, meaning we are facing a huge threat. Consider this: U.S. invasive species damage and control costs are estimated at $138 billion each year. The Interview: Please consider conducting an interview with Ted Batkin, president and CEO of the California Citrus Research Board, to learn more about this fatal tree disease. Batkin can answer the following: — What are the Asian Citrus Psyllid and Citrus Greening Disease? — Where are the insect and the disease found? — What is the threat to California? — What is being done to keep the pest and disease out of California? — What can the public do to help stop the disease and pest? *T
