MRV Targets Packet Optical Market with First Carrier Aggregation Platform to Deliver Packet-to-Optical Service Mapping

CHATSWORTH, Calif.-(Business Wire)-June 18, 2008 - MRV COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (Nasdaq: MRVC), a leading provider of products and services for WDM and optical transport, metro Ethernet, fiber optic components, 10GE, out-of-band networking and other optical networking products, today announced the OptiSwitch(R) OS9124-410G, the industry's first packet optical aggregation platform that cost-effectively combines reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexing (ROADM), packet switching and generalized-MPLS (GMPLS) to deliver complete packet-to-optical service mapping in a single device.

The OptiSwitch OS9124-410G is being announced as part of NXTcomm 2008 and is on display in MRV's booth (SU6507).

The OS9124-410G is a first-mile Metro Ethernet access/aggregation platform with 10-Gigabit WDM ports. Part of MRV's OptiSwitch 9000 product line, this platform is the industry's first carrier-class Gigabit Metro Ethernet device to provision enhanced Ethernet/IP/MPLS services across a WDM transport using a unified control plane. The innovative solution can dramatically reduce network operations through integrated packet-to-optical processing that is extended closer to a customer's edge simplifying optical core network

The GMPLS-based control plane of the OS9124 is able to make physical-layer switching decisions based on information at layer 2, 3 or 4 of the IP stack. This platform is aimed at the carrier-class auto-reconfigurable packet optical transport network (POTN) market that, according to Heavy Reading, is ramping up to be a $2.8 billion worldwide industry by 2012.

"MRV's OptiSwitch line has always been at the forefront of innovation in demarcation and aggregation switching platforms with some of the fastest, most feature-rich offerings on the market," said Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV Communications. "Adding the ROADM and GMPLS functionality to this latest generation aggregation platform once again positions the product line at the top of innovation and places it among the industry leaders driving the optimistic outlook for carrier-class packet networks."

The 2RU-high OptiSwitch OS9124-410G includes 24 predefined lasers for high-speed rates of 2.5 Gbps or 1Gbps and up to four tunable lasers for 10G DWDM wavelength services. Additionally, it offers built-in signal reshaping, retiming and retransmitting functionality for increased and optimized distance, service classification and connection-oriented mapping that enable any-to-any service stitching and comprehensive mesh technology. Like all OptiSwitch devices, the OS9124-410G offers a complete suite of OAM services, including multilayer end-to-end service and advanced fiber performance monitoring.

Through the use of a converged, automated G-MPLS control plane and reconfigurable multi-degree OEO-switched ROADM data plane, the OptiSwitch OS9124-410G can dramatically reduce network operations expenses because it can perform auto-discovery of network topology, advertise resource availability and establish/maintain protected and traffic-engineered optical paths with holistic view of the service from physical layer up to service layer. Accordingly, this delivers the metrics necessary to establish intelligent and deterministic SLAs across an optical packet transport network.

Availability

The OptiSwitch(R) OS9124-410G has 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports and four 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports in addition to WDM capability. It will be available in the second half of 2008. More information about the OptiSwitch family and its capabilities is on the MRV Web site at www.mrv.com.
